Before the trip
Your places, on a map you understand at a glance
Search for a place or tap it on the map. Each one gets its colour and icon —where you sleep, where you eat, what you’ll see— and Kokai finds photos and links for it on its own.

From Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Commons and the official website, with author and licence. A photo that isn’t from there gets dismissed.
Must-sees first
Mark each place as a must-see, if there’s time or maybe, and filter by category or tag.
The destination, in place
Type “Lisbon and Sintra” and the trip places itself on the map, with a cover that already says where you’re going.
The plan
Every day, with its times and its transfers
Order the stops, see how far one is from the next and open the whole day on the map. And if you don’t feel like starting from scratch, ask the AI for a plan.

Ideas that don’t have a day yet wait in “Undated” until you move them to one.

Between stops and for the whole day, on foot, by car or by train. It’s an estimate, and it says so.

A neighbourhood, an island or 150 km around the hotel. Ask anything —coves you can walk to, where to eat like a local— and get specific places, with the reason why and on the map.

For this year’s opening hours, closures and prices, with the sources in plain sight.
You decide
Suggestions stay as drafts until you accept them, one by one or all at once. Anything dismissed can be brought back.
With your own key
Your Anthropic or OpenAI key is kept on your device and questions go straight to them: they don’t pass through our server.
Documents
Tickets, bookings and passport. Even in airplane mode.
Save the flight PDF, the photo of your passport or the hotel booking. They stay on your phone and open offline: in the boarding queue or in a country with no data.
The wallet
Passport, ID card or annual insurance: what’s valid for every trip, saved just once.
Reminders in time
Your flight leaves tomorrow, a document expires in 30 days or your passport won’t last six months after you’re back.

On the road
Start the trip and put your phone away
While the trip is running, Kokai follows your position —on your phone, even with the screen off— and lets you know when you pass near your places. When you stop it, it stops using your location.
Alerts as you get close
Each place with its own radius: 100 m for a restaurant, 400 m for a station. And with its own message, if you like.

Your trip lives on your phone
That’s not a figure of speech: trips, documents and routes are stored on your device and open offline. Your trips also have a copy in your account so you can see them on all your devices, and if you don’t want it, you turn it off.
On your device and in your account
Trips, places, plan and packing list, with you offline and in your account for your other devices. Turn the copy off and it’s deleted from the server.
Your location stays put
Your position and route aren’t sent to our server, and they’re only used while the trip is running.
No ads, no tracking

Your AI, your key
The key stays on your device, and the AI never receives your documents or your route.
Delete means delete
Your document files are never uploaded to our server, and deleting a document deletes them. The account, with the copy of your trips, is deleted from inside the app.

The name
A name that comes from the sea
Kokai is 航海 (kōkai), the Japanese word for a sea voyage: the long journey you prepare before casting off and live while it lasts. The two halves of the app, in two kanji.
To sail
It holds 舟, the boat: the one that crosses.
The sea
It holds 氵, water: everything between here and there.
And in Japanese it sounds just like 後悔 (kōkai), “regret”. The motto writes itself:
後悔のない航海を Kōkai no nai kōkai o A voyage with nothing to regret.
Questions before you set off
How much does it cost?
Today, nothing. The AI runs on your own Anthropic or OpenAI key: whatever each question costs you pay to that provider at their rates, not to us, and everything else works without AI. When the app reaches the stores, we’ll say so here.
Do I need a connection during the trip?
Not for what matters: trips, the plan, documents with their files and the packing list are on your device. The background map, place search and AI do need a connection. Offline maps by area are on the way.
What does it do with my location?
It only uses it when you ask: to centre the map and, with the trip running, to alert you and record your route. Your position and route stay on your device, and when you stop the trip it stops using it.
Does it drain the battery?
It only follows your position while the trip is running, and the app works out the alerts itself without asking the system to watch anything else. Before reaching the stores it gets tested for an hour with the screen off on mid-range phones.
When is it coming to iPhone and Android?
It’s on the way. Today you can use it in the browser, where on-the-road mode works with the tab in front; on your phone it will keep going with the screen off.
Does it sync between my devices?
Yes: your trips are copied to your account and you have them on every device you sign in on. Document files (the PDF, the photo of your passport) stay on the device where you add them. If you’d rather keep everything only on each device, turn the copy off in Settings and it’s deleted from the server. Sharing a trip with the people you travel with is next.
What if the AI gets it wrong?
It can happen, and that’s why nothing it suggests goes into your trip until you accept it. A place that comes from the AI is marked as an approximate location until you confirm it or drag it into place.
Why is it called Kokai?
Kokai comes from 航海 (kōkai), “sea voyage”: 航 means to sail and 海, the sea. In Japanese it sounds just like 後悔, “regret”, and that’s where our motto comes from: 後悔のない航海を, a voyage with nothing to regret. The logo draws that voyage: a route that leaves an amber harbour and comes back to it.
